Girl Scout Council of Southern Appalachians

Who We Are

Our program, Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE), supports youth development with a leadership model specifically designed to give girls experiences and help them develop the 21st century leadership skills they need to be successful.

All experiences in Girl Scouting incorporate three “keys to leadership”:

  • Discover – Girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.
  • Connect – Girls care about, inspire and team with others locally and globally.
  • Take Action – Girls act to make the world a better place.

Girl Scout experiences are also, as much as possible, girl led and encourage learning by doing and cooperative learning. Through these processes, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.

GSCSA reaches girls by using council and service unit events, troop meeting activities and community outreach programs facilitated by paid staff, volunteers and community education partners that facilitate a variety of pathways – troop, series, outdoors and events. Membership is open to all girls grades K - 12.

What We Do

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better placeFounded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, our core business is leadership development for girls.  Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians (GSCSA) was formed in 2009 through the merger of three East Tennessee Councils. We serve over 13,000 girls and 5,000 adult volunteers in 46 counties in Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee and Northwest Georgia, including 148 girls and 68 volunteers in Roane County.
